Are Reed Diffusers Toxic To Dogs
Are reed diffusers toxic to dogs?
When used correctly and safely, reed diffusers are not toxic to dogs.
Some Important considerations:
1. It's best to start by saying, like any product that carries any scent, which is most things in some way or another, if you notice any signs of allergic reactions in your pet then cease use immediately, and consult a vet regarding managing any reaction.
2. The home fragrance industry is provided with guidance in the UK under IFRA regulations. those regulations apply to humans, not pets. The only way to definitively find out if something is toxic to an animal is to carry out animal testing. Animal testing is not something we support. There is not a general appetite amongst brands (fortunately) to go down that road.
3. Anything you can smell, is giving off fragrance particles, that goes for your furniture polish, general cleaning sprays, washing up liquid, fabric softener, bleach, bodily fluids (and gases), and anything else you might think of, so your pet is most likely exposed to a variety of different smells anyway.
4. It comes down to common sense, reed diffusers aren't a suitable substitute for good hygiene practices, so dont put a reed diffuser in a room that has a bad odour, clean the room, then decide if you still want a reed diffuser. A good example of this would be to not put a diffuser next to a dog kennel / cage if that's something you use in your home for when you are out. some people use cages of the correct size as it can help reduce separation anxiety in pets, as they cant pace up and down.
5. Keep the reed diffuser out of reach of your pets. In the vast majority of cases pets will be just fine with you having reed diffusers in the house. You must however keep them out of reach, they may be very harmful to your dog if the fragrance solution is consumed, so thats a big no no.
