How Do Reed Diffusers Work?

Reed diffuser scented with rose and rhubarb fragrance

Firstly, what is a reed diffuser?

Reed Diffusers are passive way to scent your home, that means they are low maintenance and provide the room with a subtle scent for a long time. A reed diffuser consists of a bottle, fragrance mixture, and reeds.

How do you use a reed diffuser?

When your diffuser arrives, remove the packaging, carefully remove the stopper cap on a level surface. A surface that is hard wearing like a worktop is ideal, in case of any minor splashes.

Place the reeds in the bottle of fragrance. For smaller rooms, fewer reeds may suffice. Using fewer reeds also has the advantage of extending the life of the diffuser.

So...how do they work?

Reed diffusers work by drawing fragrance up the reeds in a process called capiliary action, Some fragrances are better at soaking up reeds and some are not, it all depends on the viscocity of the fragrance (how thick it is).

Once the fragrance has fully soaked into the reeds, the fragrance evaporates into the space surrounding the diffuser. the natural movement of the air in the room is what causes the fragrance to be dispersed around the room. For this reason it is key to not tuck the diffuser away in the corner too much as it may not work so well!
